#BoycottTarget Movement Receives Half A Million Signatures And Dominates Facebook Trending 3 Days In A Row

For some inexplicable reason, Target decided to dive headfirst into the transgender bathroom debate by announcing that they would allow men and women to use whatever bathroom they feel like in their stores.

As you can imagine, millions of people across the country weren’t pleased and immediately a petition was spread around that gathered over 400,000 signatures.

Now it appears that Target is getting hammered on social media as well which confirms that this issue has become a major national news story and not in the way Target probably expected.

The hashtag #BoycottTarget has topped Facebook’s top 10 trends for three days in a row from Friday through Sunday, as hundreds of thousands of Americans have signed the American Family Association’s (AFA) petition opposing the retail giant’s decision to allow men to use women’s changing rooms and bathrooms.

What began as a corporate statement of solidarity with LGBT activists has morphed into a public relations disaster for Target. On Tuesday, Target stated it “welcomes transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.” Target added, “Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

Then the AFA launched its #BoycottTarget petition. As of Sunday, the AFA says 444,405 individuals have signed a pledge not to shop at Target.

Citizen comments across social media have highlighted the obvious myriad problems with allowing shoppers to self-define their gender. A core criticism has been whether predators will use Target’s transgender policy to gain access to bathrooms or changing rooms with the intent to video or assault customers.

Target had to know they would receive backlash and it is very strange that they didn’t wait for this controversy to die down a little bit before making this stand.

While it is hard to tell exactly what effect this boycott will have it is very clear that Target is going to lose business over this decision.

Shoppers, especially those with children, obviously feel uncomfortable with sharing a bathroom with the opposite sex and you can come to whatever conclusion you want about that but at the end of the day it means they won’t shop at Target if they can help it.

This controversy is not going away any time soon at at some point you would think that rational minds will prevail and say enough is enough.

Political correctness should never trump public safety.
