Heaviest rain in history: Catastrophic scenes in Houston as 200,000 people are forced from their homes by flooding and 10,000 survivors fill convention center to TWICE its capacity after Harvey breaks American rainfall record

AP | 29 Aug 2017

Hurricane Harvey has dumped the most rain on the continental US in history it was revealed today – as catastrophic scenes unfold in Houston with shelters overwhelmed with survivors, a curfew in place to prevent looting, dams overflowing and a chemical plant at risk of exploding.

According to Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke, there are currently about 20,000 Hurricane Harvey evacuees in shelters.

Many of Houston’s evacuees are crammed into the city’s convention center which is now overcrowded with 10,000 evacuees – double what officials initially planned.

The George R Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston, Texas, has a capacity of up to 5,000 people, but Monday night 9,021 people stayed in the center, many sleeping on chairs and on the floor because of a shortage of cots.

Groomsmen adopt malnourished dog and ALL her puppies after finding them cowering in a hole in the woods during Bachelor party

A group of groomsmen adopted a malnourished dog and her litter of puppies after finding them in a hole in the woods during one of the group’s Bachelor parties.
The men from Vicksburg, Michigan, had traveled to Tennessee to celebrate Mitchel Craddock’s forthcoming wedding when the dog appeared at the door of the log cabin they had rented.
They followed her into the woods where they found her seven puppies hiding in a hole, covered in dirt and fleas.
Now all of the dogs live with the men in a five-mile radius.

‘I’ll look after you now’: Caring chimp adopts ‘ugly’ kitten found in Russian zoo after staff refuse to take it home because of its ‘strange-looking’ tail

As the age-old adage goes, a dog is a man’s best friend.
And perhaps the felines of the world have now found their soulmates too, if this tender moment between a kitten and a chimpanzee is anything to go by.
Captured on camera at the Irkutsk city zoo in south-eastern Russia, Lea the young chimp plays with Bobby, an unwanted kitten she took in after it was found in the zoo.
The one-and-a-half-month-old kitten was found in one of the zoo’s enclosures.
Employees at the zoo kept the kitten, but decided to put it in quarantine so as not to endanger the other animals.
Lea the chimpanzee, who is five years old, spotted the tiny kitten while she was walking around the zoo with one of her keepers.

Is that a cat fish? Little feline is spotted swimming a mile out at sea – and she’s doing the doggy paddle!

Curiosity almost killed this cat as it got itself into difficulty swimming a mile out from the shore.
Environmental workers clearing rubbish out at sea could not believe their eyes when they saw the animal swimming way off the coast.
The marine moggy, spotted off Turkey’s biggest city of Istanbul, appeared to have been swimming for a long time in the Golden Horn, the inlet that links the Bosphorus with the city.
A rescue mission was launched to catch the cat, which was visibly tiring and under attack from seagulls.

The elephant – thought to be just one hour old – was exploring its new surroundings at the Djuma Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.
In a particularly heartwarming moment, the elder members of the herd are visibly concerned as they race to the calf’s aid, scooping him up with their trunks.

Daisy came from a hoarder with 200 cats and 100 dogs. She may only have one eye but she has a big heart to compensate

A photographer from Los Angeles has been taking pictures of blind cats in the hope that people may want to adopt them.

Casey Elise from Los Angeles has worked for a number of animal shelters and rescue groups in the past to raise the profile of abandoned felines.

She has also set up a GoFundMe account to help raise funds for the center.

Milo’s Sanctuary is a special needs cat rescue center. The facility promises a lifetime of love, care and much-needed medical attention for the unwanted pets.

‘A few months ago, I noticed an increase in the number of blind cats and kittens at the shelter and rescues where I volunteer. It felt like a sign so I decided I would do a series on blind cats,’ wrote Casey on BoredPanda

Milo’s Sanctuary was founded on the belief that all cats deserve a second chance at life, especially those that have physical disabilities, are seniors, have a terminal illness, or have been abused and need someone to love and understand them.

Were it not for the sanctuary, the cats and kittens that would likely otherwise die abandoned in a shelter or on the street.

ANIMAL CRUELTY | Police dog, Totti, left in hot car to die

Police dog dies after being left in hot car for more than TWO HOURS during a training exercise
totti

The two-year-old yellow Labrador, named Totti, was found in the squad car at Rockview state prison near Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, last Thursday, according to authorities.

Sgt Chad Holland, the K-9’s handler, had stored training items in the vehicle at the end of the exercise and didn’t realize the animal was locked inside, said Amy Worden, spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.

Holland put the equipment in the car at 12.15pm but did not know Totti was still in the vehicle until 2.44pm, Worden told Penn Live.

Dog handlers and other staff tried to cool the K-9 with a water hose and ice and took him, still conscious, to a nearby veterinary clinic, but he died that night.

The department said Totti’s death ‘has been very devastating for everyone involved’.

Totti was a member of the state Department of Corrections Drug Interdictions Unit.
