Washington (AFP) – A child in the northeastern US state of Rhode Island has become the first to die from an ongoing outbreak of a respiratory virus, enterovirus D68, health officials said Wednesday.

The child died from an unusual combination of enterovirus D68 — which has infected more than 470 kids across the United States since August — and a staph infection.

“Infection by both Staphylococcus aureus sepsis and EV-D68 is a very rare combination that can cause very severe illness in children and adults,” the Rhode Island Department of Health said in a statement.

Enterovirus D68 typically causes flu-like symptoms, but in some cases it can cause wheezing and breathing problems that may require hospitalization.

Health officials are investigating nine cases of muscle weakness or paralysis in Colorado children and whether the culprit might be a virus causing severe respiratory illness across the country.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday sent doctors an alert about the polio-like cases and said the germ — enterovirus 68 — was detected in four out of eight of the sick children who had a certain medical test. The status of the ninth case is unclear.

The virus can cause paralysis but other germs can, too. Health officials don’t know whether the virus caused any of the children’s arm and leg weaknesses or whether it’s just a germ they coincidentally picked up.

(CNN) — The fear began just after news broke Thursday that a long-range business jet with an isolation pod left the United States for Liberia, where it will evacuate two Americans infected with Ebola.

Twitter exploded with questions about the deadly virus, which according to the World Health Organization is believed to have killed hundreds in four West African nations. And with reaction to news that two infected Americans would soon be on their way back to the United States.

“Why are they doing this?” Robin Hunter asked in a post on Twitter.

Child Services Threatens To Take Mother’s Baby Over Goat Milk Formula
A mother in Brooklin, Maine was threatened by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) this week after the state learned that she was feeding her three-month-old son goat milk formula.

After 17-year-old Alorah Gellerson’s son Carson began having trouble with breastfeeding, Gellerson decided to try homemade goat milk formula instead and was amazed by the results.

“We put celery juice in it, and he just loves that, and it worked really well with his body, and he grew like a weed,” said Gellerson.

After taking her son to a routine doctor’s appointment, Gellerson, excited at her baby’s improvement, mentioned how well her son was doing since switching over to the new formula. Unfortunately, results were not important to the doctor who immediately reported Gellerson to DHHS, claiming her actions endangered the child.

“She came in and threatened to take him away and put him in foster care until I complied to go to the doctor and get him seen,” explained Gellerson.
