Hurricane Harvey has dumped the most rain on the continental US in history it was revealed today – as catastrophic scenes unfold in Houston with shelters overwhelmed with survivors, a curfew in place to prevent looting, dams overflowing and a chemical plant at risk of exploding.

According to Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke, there are currently about 20,000 Hurricane Harvey evacuees in shelters.

Many of Houston’s evacuees are crammed into the city’s convention center which is now overcrowded with 10,000 evacuees – double what officials initially planned.

The George R Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston, Texas, has a capacity of up to 5,000 people, but Monday night 9,021 people stayed in the center, many sleeping on chairs and on the floor because of a shortage of cots.

Despite his heroic effort to fight off a knife-wielding attacker from a then-16-year-old girl, Target is suing a man who stopped a stabbing in one of their Pittsburgh-area stores.

Michael Turner, 50, was at the big box chain’s location in East Liberty when he confronted attacker Leon Walls, 44, and wrestled him away from his victim Allison Meadows.

Turner is now speaking out after blamed him and the other men for the attack.

The attacker was found guilty last month of charges including attempted homicide for the March 2013 incident, though was also found mentally ill.

Video surveillance of the event showed Meadows’s mother looking on in horror as her daughter was taken near the store’s checkout line.

A group of bystanders including Turner and his friends were able to rush at Walls and take him down, preventing any more harm to the teen.

Police arrived and used pepper spray to take the stabbing suspect into custody.

However, Target says Turner and his friends caused ‘unreasonable risk of harm to others’ when they pursued and ultimately helped capture the attacker.

As civil war rages around him, ambulance driver spends his savings on feeding orphaned pets

  • Alaa spends £2.50 a day on meat to feed around 150 strays near his home
  • His neighbourhood has been deserted after shelling by pro-Assad forces

When he’s not treating casualties of the Syrian civil war, ambulance driver Alaa still finds the time and energy to help the lesser-known victims of the conflict.

For he has started his own one-man charitable enterprise by feeding scores of cats that have been orphaned as a result of the war.

Alaa spends around $4 (£2.50) of his savings each day on meat to feed around 150 strays in Masaken Hanano, a neigbourhood in Aleppo.
