Equifax managers sell off stocks before notifying U.S. consumers of massive information theft

The personal data of nearly half of all Americans – including names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, credit-card information, addresses and even driver’s license numbers – may have been stolen by criminal hackers, one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the U.S. said Thursday.

Equifax announced that the data breach may impact as many as 143 million U.S. customers, CNBC reported. That’s nearly half of the current U.S. population of 324 million, meaning it impacts a massive number of Americans and is one of the largest cybersecurity breaches in U.S. history.

Equifax apparently discovered the breach 40 days ago, on July 29, and it is only now announcing the incident.

Equifax said the breach occurred from mid-May through July 2017. Numbers for 209,000 U.S. credit cards were accessed, in addition to “certain dispute documents with personal identifying information for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers.”

However, the company made no mention of the fact that its chief financial officer, John Gamble, sold shares worth $946,374 just three days after the breach was discovered. Also, Joseph Loughran, president of U.S. Information Solutions, sold off $584,099 in stocks. And Rodolfo Ploder, president of Workforce Solutions, sold shares worth $250,458.

The sanctity of medical privacy and doctor-patient privilege is a thing of the past with Obamacare.

The insurance exchange database hasn’t even gone live yet, and there has been a security breach that left the personal information of 2400 people exposed.

An employee of Minnesota’s Obamacare exchange, MNsure, sent an unencrypted file to the wrong person and left 2,400 people’s private information at the mercy of a nearby insurance agent.

One exchange staffer’s simple mistake gave insurance broker Jim Koester access to an Excel document of Social Security numbers, names, addresses and other personal data for whole a list of insurance agents. Luckily for the 2,400, Koester was cooperative — and unnerved.

“The more I thought about it, the more troubled I was,” Koester told the Minnesota Star Tribune. “What if this had fallen into the wrong hands? It’s scary. If this is happening now, how can clients of MNsure be confident their data is safe?” (source)

What would you do if you logged in to your bank account someday and it showed that you had a zero balance and your bank had no record that you ever had any money in your account?  What would you do if all of the money in your bank account suddenly disappeared in a single moment?  If you had not kept any paper records, which most Americans do not, it would be exceedingly difficult to prove to the bank that you actually had any money in the bank.  If you don’t think that something like this could ever happen in the United States, you might want to think again.  Cyber attacks against major banks in the United States are becoming more powerful and more sophisticated with each passing month.  In fact, major U.S. bank websites have been offline for a total of 249 hours over the past six weeks.  And just last month, thousands upon thousands of Chase customers logged into their bank accounts only to discover that their balances had all been reset to zero.  Anyone that would want to cause complete and total economic chaos in the United States could accomplish it very easily by wiping out all of our bank account records.  So please do not keep all of your money in a single bank, and from now on please keep a paper copy of all of your bank account statements.  At some point it is likely that one of these cyber attacks will cause permanent damage to our banking system, and you want to be protected.
