In Interview, Top Indonesian Muslim Scholar Says Stop Pretending That Orthodox Islam and Violence Aren’t Linked

Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country, has a constitution that recognizes other major religions, and practices a syncretic form of Islam that draws on not just the faith’s tenets but local spiritual and cultural traditions. As a result, the nation has long been a voice of, and for, moderation in the Islamic world.

Yet Indonesia is not without its radical elements. Though most are on the fringe, they can add up to a significant number given Indonesia’s 260-million population. In the early 2000s, the country was terrorized by Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a homegrown extremist organization allied with al-Qaeda. JI’s deadliest attack was the 2002 Bali bombing that killed 202 people. While JI has been neutralized, ISIS has claimed responsibility for recent, smaller terrorist incidents in the country and has inspired some Indonesians to fight in Syria — Indonesians who could pose a threat when they return home. The country has also seen the rise of hate groups that preach intolerance and violence against local religious and ethnic minorities, which include Shia and Ahmadiya Muslims.

Among Indonesia’s most influential Islamic leaders is Yahya Cholil Staquf, 51,advocates a modern, moderate Islam. He is general secretary of the Nahdlatul Ulama, which, with about 50 million members, is the country’s biggest Muslim organization. Yahya. This interview, notable for Yahya’s candor, was first published on Aug. 19 in German in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Here are excerpts translated from the original Bahasa Indonesia into English.

Many Western politicians and intellectuals say that Islamist terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. What is your view?

Western politicians should stop pretending that extremism and terrorism have nothing to do with Islam. There is a clear relationship between fundamentalism, terrorism, and the basic assumptions of Islamic orthodoxy. So long as we lack consensus regarding this matter, we cannot gain victory over fundamentalist violence within Islam.

Radical Islamic movements are nothing new. They’ve appeared again and again throughout our own history in Indonesia. The West must stop ascribing any and all discussion of these issues to “Islamophobia.” Or do people want to accuse me — an Islamic scholar — of being an Islamophobe too?

Courtney Love has slammed a pro-Palestinian activist and accused her of being an ‘anti-American fraud’ in a Twitter tirade.

Love fired off a series of messages at Linda Sarsour – who helped organize the anti-Trump Women’s March earlier this year – on Wednesday morning.

The 52-year-old’s outburst was in response to Sarsour’s  campaign raising money for a Somalian mother who claims she was attacked by a white man in a hate crime and was racially abused.

But police have said it is not a hate crime, while her alleged attackers say they stepped in because they saw another Somali woman hitting a young child in the face with a shoe.

How is it that nearly fifteen (15) years after 9/11 none (ie ZERO) of the Islamic advisors to the United States government have shared with our leaders the Quranic concept of abrogation, the definition of “jihad” in sharia (Islamic Law), or the fact sharia obliges jihad until the entire world is under sharia?
It is because sharia obliges Muslims to lie to non-Muslims when the goal is obligatory (eg Jihad), and makes it a capital crime for Muslims to teach other Muslims anything about Islam which is not a part of authoritative Islam.
This means if American leadership wants to know the enemy and understand the threat, they need to stop listening to suit-wearing jihadis and read what Muslims teach when they are teaching other Muslims.

I work at a university library in Boston, Mass., and books are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal System, not by title or “importance”. Muslim students (most of them from abroad) told administrators that they were offended because the Koran wasn’t given a place of honor on a top shelf, as dictated by Islamic law and custom.
Library staff were then ordered to shift entire sections of books in the stacks so that the Koran could be “honored” appropriately.

Illegals steal 1 million Social Security Numbers, IRS turns blind eye

The IRS inspector general says the tax-collection agency is aware of more than one million illegal immigrants stealing Social Security numbers of citizens to file tax returns, yet has done virtually nothing to stop the practice and has not even notified the Americans victimized by identity fraud.

According to reports, the IRS has been aware of the problem for at least five years but nothing has been done to combat it. A test program to combat the fraud was scrapped and was deemed to be thoroughly insufficient anyway.

Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., won his seat in Congress by toppling sitting House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in 2014, running on combating illegal immigration and promoting fiscal discipline. He told WND and Radio America this is a textbook case of the government ignoring one of its fundamental responsibilities.

“I used to teach ethics for 18 years at the college level, along with economics. You can’t make up a case study that is this crazy,” Brat said. “I think I would give the students a migraine if they had to piece together the logic of everything that’s wrong here.”

 
 

Muslims scream, ‘F— America!’ after conviction for food-stamp fraud

A Muslim wife and daughter in Buffalo, New York, shouted, “F— America!” and raised their middle fingers at television cameras after their family member was convicted of a major food-stamp scam.

Ahmed Alshami, the husband and father of the two women hurling expletives and making obscene gestures, is not a U.S. citizen. A Facebook page appearing to belong to Alshami indicates he is from Sanaa, Yemen.

Alshami owns a Buffalo deli called IGA Community Express Mart and has been convicted of third-degree burglary and second-degree possession of public benefit cards.

After the court hearing, Alshami’s wife, Nadia Alhaj, and daughter exited the building. His daughter flipped off reporters while Alhaj shouted, “Are you happy now? F— you! F— America! F— it!”
 

 
 

IRS to target 20 million Americans who didn’t buy Obamacare

Are you one of 20 million uninsured Americans who hasn’t signed up for Obamacare?

Then you might be getting a note from the IRS this year “suggesting” you enroll.

“Getting a letter from the IRS can be a threatening and nerve-racking experience; it seldom is seen as a suggestion and more of a threat,” Galen Institute President Grace-Marie Turner wrote in a Forbes column Wednesday.

The IRS is reportedly “reaching out” to Americans who claimed an exemption or chose to pay the tax penalty for not purchasing mandatory health insurance. The ploy is intended to “attract”
Obamacare enrollees.

“The government is particularly interested in compliance from healthy young people,” Turner wrote.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip Steve Scalise and Ways & Means Chairman Kevin Brady wrote a letter Wednesday to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. It stated, “We strongly object to any action by the Administration to improperly use sensitive taxpayer information to identify and harass individuals who have rejected the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) by choosing to pay a tax rather than be forced into a health care plan they don’t need and don’t want.”

The lawmakers cautioned the IRS about its use of “protected taxpayer information,” and they asked Koskinen for more information concerning how the IRS intends to “reach out directly to individuals” and how the Department of Health and Human Services plans to push for “compliance with the individual mandate.”
